Oriental Emerald is the popular name of the green variety of sapphires. These sapphires have a greenish tint which may vary in intensity from stone to stone. Due to this green hue it looks like an emerald but is actually a sapphire. The Oriental Emeralds are mined from sapphire mines of Sri Lanka, Thailand and Madagascar. Sapphires come in various colours the most common of which are pale, yellow, blue, purple and the colourless variety also know as a white sapphire. The Colours like Golden, Pink, Orange and Green are very rare in Sapphires. Among these green is the rarest. This is why the green sapphires, Oriental Emeralds, are the most expensive of all sapphires. Due to its green colour the Oriental Emerald is used as a remedial gemstone in Jyotish for Mercury (Budh). It has very powerful effects on the wearer which are almost ten times more effective than an Emerald. If given an option one must always choose an oriental emerald over a simple emerald for use as a Jyotish gem. Oriental emeralds are also a good collector's item and people collect them due to their extreme rare occurence in nature.
