Today, on 24th January 2020, Saturn is entering Capricorn, a sign ruled by Saturn itself. In this 2020-23 transit of Shani in Makar Rashi it will consistently stay there till 29th April 2022, when it will enter Kumbh Rashi for a short time. Then, on 12th July 2022 Shani will retrograde back into Capricorn and will finally re-enter Kumbh Rashi on 17th January 2023. Makar and Kumbh are Saturn’s own signs and it becomes more powerful and effective when it is in one of these signs. Shani's usual transit in a Rashi is for around two and a half years and it completes one cycle of all twelve signs in around twenty nine to thirty years.

The previous transit of Saturn in Makar Rashi was in 1990-93. On 21st March 1990 Shani entered Makar Rashi but it then went back to Dhanu Rashi in a retrograde motion on 20th June 1990. Then, again Saturn entered Capricorn on 14th December 1990 and stayed there till 5th March 1993, when it changed signs to Aquarius. But, Shani retrograded back from Kumbh Rashi to Makar Rashi on 15th October 1993. Then, it went back to Kumbh Rashi in a direct motion on 10th November 1993.

The next transit of Saturn in Capricorn after this 2020-23 transit will be in 2049-52. Saturn will enter Makar Rashi on 6th March 2049 but on 10th July 2049 it will retrograde back into Sagittarius. Shani will then re-enter Makar Rashi on 4th December 2049 and then it will stay there till it finally enters Kumbh Rashi on 25th February 2052.

In this 2020-23 transit of Shani in Makar Rashi, Shani will be joined by Brihaspati in Makar Rashi in the following periods.
- First, from 30th March 2020 to 30th June 2020. Jupiter will retrograde back to Dhanu Rashi from Makar on 30th June 2020
- Jupiter will enter Makar Rashi again on 20th November 2020. It will then enter Kumbh Rashi on 5th April 2021.
- From Kumbh Rashi Brihaspati will retrograde back into Makar Rashi on 14th September 2021. Then, it will finally re-enter Kumbh on 20th November 2021.

The previous Guru-Shani yuti in Makar Rashi took place during the 1961-64 transit of Shani in Makar Rashi. After this 2020-23 transit the subsequent such a yuti of Saturn-Jupiter in Capricorn will happen during the 2079-81 transit of Shani in Makar Rashi. So, after a period of around 60 years Saturn and Jupiter return to Makar Rashi. It is a 60 year cycle.

Saturn in Capricorn brings about great changes which have long term effects on the masses. It motivates the leaders to be more ruthless and ambitious, and it generates mass opinions for or against the ruling classes. It brings about revolutions, creation of nations, technological inventions and fast progress in warfare. During this 2020-23 transit of Shani in Makar Rashi, new advances in information technology, aviation, transportation, warfare, space sciences and robotics will happen. There are high chances of an increase in terrorist activities and there is high likelihood of war too. Assassination attempts on prominent political leaders are also possible. Natural calamities and epidemics will be highly serious and devastating.

For India, this transit will have both positive and negative effects. On one hand, changes in the economic policies and, banking and taxation rules will bring about long term changes in the way business is done in India. On the other hand, political instability will increase and the common man will become more frustrated with the existing leadership. The people will become more vocal and emphatic in their demands about the change in the political situation in India.

Some historical events which have happened during the previous transits of Saturn in Capricorn are as follows –

During the 1990-93 transit –

-    20th December 1990 – World’s first server and website are launched at CERN.
-    17th January 1991 - Operation Desert Storm begins against Iraq’s dictator Saddam Hussein during the Gulf War.

The Cuban Missile Crisis in October 1962 was the closest when this cold war came to converting into a full scale nuclear war.
