Mangal or Kuja are synonyms for Mars. Mangal Dosha or Kuja Dosha is a dosha related to Mars and its position in horoscope. A person having Mangal Dosha is called a Mangalik.

Mars is a planet which signifies valour, aggression, courage, anger, energy, force, power, strength and vigour. When Mars has significant effect and influence in the marriage and relationships related factors in a horoscope Mangal Dosha is formed.

Mangal Dosha is formed when Mars is in following houses of the horoscope:

First House

Second House (according to some schools of Jyotish)

Fourth House

Seventh House

Eighth House

Twelfth House

These are the houses which directly or indirectly contribute to the happiness in marriage. If both partners are having Mangal Dosha in their horoscopes then this dosha is nullified and canceled. But, if only one partner has Mangal Dosha and the other does not then this dosha can harm their relationship and can bring negative results to one of them. These negative results range from separation or divorce to chronic illness, accident or untimely death.

There are various remedies or Upayas prescribed for Mangal Dosha and various schools of Jyotish differ in their opinion on the remedies.
